Xcel Energy Overview
Xcel Energy, Advanced Meter Infrastructure
The population utilizing energy provided by Xcel Energy is constantly increasing; with this, comes innovation. IBM conducted Design Thinking Workshops to enable Xcel’s participants to envision the future state for its Advanced Meter Infrastructure by creating and delivering improved experiences for its customers.
Persona Journey Maps
During these hands-on collaborative sessions, our team's goal was to understand the personas representing the population that would be the end user for the AMI technology.
Our team ran through IBM's Design Thinking process, incorporating: defining the persona, understanding the current state, day to day, creating an empathy map, laying out the 'as-is' scenario. From here, an Xcel facilitator talked our participants through the AMI technology. This encouraged participants to think of the 'to-be' future state of Xcel.

Digitized To-Be Scenarios, Mapping for User Journey Maps
To-Be Mapping
IBM has a strong methodology on design thinking workshops. We divided our participants into 4 teams to best cover the 4 main personas given to us as a starting point for the Xcel AMI Workshops. While much of the content filling these journey maps focused on the persona, we also wanted to convey the future state, or as we term it "to-be" scenarios.
As the designer I wanted to display this information that would make it easy to understand each of these steps for each persona. Our team digitized the sticky note posters to fully grasp the overarching feelings that filled each section. From here, I mixed in the different quotes, personality traits, and snippets from the day in the life sections to craft a comprehensible journey for a future state persona utilizing the Xcel AMI technology.
